Kyle, now 18 years old, has joined the team as a freshman. Prior to joining the team, he had never played esports. “I walked around knowing that I like playing video games,” he says. “Competitive teams were a fun new step.” Since Kyle joined the team, esports has really started to take hold. Over 1,200 schools have registered esports teams. About 200 universities offer scholarships to esports athletes. But for some, the idea of esports sounds strange.
